A high efficiency scintillation detector is used in these systems.  The high efficiency is due to utilizing the largest possible diameter to collect as many photons as possible, coupled with the use of a sodium iodide crystal.  Sodium iodide is the most efficient scintillator available.  Great care has been taken to provide impedance matching between the photomultiplier tube and the FET preamplifier.

     The detector is protected from external electromagnetic influence by a mµ metal shield that surrounds the phototube and crystal area.  The detector components are easily accessed by simply removing the cap from the detector assembly.
